Food is Medicine!
It seems aging is accepted by most people as an inevitable part of their life and they are accepting it with all the related degenerative diseases and chronic conditions. They believe fighting the symptoms is the way to go. The fact is that growing older cannot be avoided, but many effects of aging can be prevented or minimized.
What is aging?


In simple terms, aging is the destruction of our cells through oxidation. Our cells react much in the same way as an apple that is cut in half and exposed to the air. It has lost its protective cover of antioxidants contained in the skin, and the browning is the result of oxidative damage caused by free radicals.


Free radicals are molecules that are highly reactive and unstable because they contain an unpaired electron in their molecular structure. Electrons are only stable in pairs, and the free radical tries to stabilize itself by attaching to cell membranes in the body, robbing their molecules of electrons. This process generates another unstable free radical, thus starting a chain reaction, and eventually leads to the cell’s death. This process is called oxidation and it happens all the time in our bodies. In fact, it is estimated that every cell in our body is attacked by free radicals thousands of times a day.


Oxygen, which we need in order to survive, initiates a free radical chain reaction, but free radicals are also formed as by-products of normal metabolism, by the breakdown of bacteria through white blood cells, or by enzymatic reactions. However, today’s increased oxidative stress is caused by external factors, such as higher UV radiation of the sun, physical and emotional stress, pollution, smoking, alcohol, processed food and high intake of saturated fats. The environmental pollutants enter our bodies via the skin, respiration, the digestive tract, or other means.


Our bodies are producing certain antioxidant molecules and enzymes, but for the main supply of antioxidants we are dependent on the food we eat. The main purpose of antioxidants is to neutralize oxidizing free radicals by donating an electron to them or by absorbing one of theirs. This will stabilize the molecules and thus slow or stop the destructive process.
However, balance of the opposing forces is very important. Too many antioxidants can achieve the opposite. This is documented by the side effects that synthetic vitamins can have if taken in too large doses.


Ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has effectively relied on the theory of yin-yang balance in diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions for more than 2,000 years.
In the Western world, yin-yang balance is often misunderstood as a religious belief or principle of lifestyle. In attempting to define the physical meaning of yin-yang in TCM and by correlating it with biochemical processes, it could be argued that it is similar to antioxidation-oxidation with yin representing antioxidation and yang representing oxidation. The theory can be partially supported by the fact that the yin herbs have on average a much higher antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and phenolic content than the yang herbs. In TCM theory, inflammation is a typical symptom of excessive yang.


In any case, food is the medicine we need to protect us from free radicals caused by oxidative stress. Epidemiological studies have shown that nutritional deficiencies are responsible for 95 percent of all degenerative and chronic diseases, and free radical damage has been scientifically linked to at least 50 of them.

There are several forms of free radicals or oxidants:
   
Hydroperoxyl radical
Lipoperoxyl radical
Hydroxyl radical
Peroxynitrite
Singlet oxygen
 

As there are different forms of free radicals, they are affecting our bodies and organs in different ways. Therefore, one antioxidant alone cannot protect us effectively from the destructive forces. Even a synthetic multivitamin complex cannot copy the manifold antioxidant powers that fruit, vegetables and herbs can provide. Only plants contain the hundreds of naturally occurring antioxidants and enzymes and thousands of phytochemicals that are highly diverse in effect and use. Instead of measuring the individual recommended dosage of a few synthetic vitamins and minerals, the overall capacity to neutralize or absorb free radicals is needed to give an effective indication of measure.
 

The only diminishing factor today with fruit and vegetables is that they are often no longer present in sufficient amounts in today’s food. Soil depletion and long storage times at the supermarket and at home as well as overcooking greatly affect the quality of the food. The high consumption of processed food and fast food is greatly responsible for the strong rise in degenerative and chronic diseases, as we are no longer consuming enough of these all-important nutrients.
 

Today, in order to maintain a strong immune system and a healthy body, we need at least 3,500–5,000 ORAC units (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) per day to fight the free radicals our bodies are exposed to. However, our diet provides only an average of 700–1,000 ORAC units.
 

Another important and often underrated factor for lack of sufficient nutrients is the way in which we absorb them into our body. Poor eating habits, a stressful lifestyle and our age have a great effect on our gastrointestinal tract or gut. If our digestive system is not functioning properly, all kinds of problems can arise:
 

Nutrients may not be ingested, leading to low energy levels.
The immune system can be compromised, leading to viral and bacterial infections.
Toxic bacteria can infest the intestinal tract.
Other bodily systems can be affected too, from the skin and hair to the nervous system.
 

Without argument, the gastrointestinal tract is one of the most important parts of the body, with its function to absorb nutrients, including antioxidants, and to prevent toxins and pathogens from entering the organism. Furthermore, no one person is the same in his or her genetic make-up. Our gender, age and body weight differ. Therefore, no one product or dosage is right for every person. Degenerative and chronic diseases document themselves with varying and differing conditions and symptoms. Very often, this could mean that four to eight different products or combinations in various dosage forms would be required, with two to four tablets or capsules each.
